Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has officially endorsed Ambassador Abdulfatai Yahaya Seriki as his preferred successor ahead of the forthcoming governorship primaries of the All Progressives Congress in Kwara State.
In a statement issued after what he described as “extensive consultations with party structures and leadership,” the governor said Yahaya Seriki emerged as the most suitable candidate to sustain the achievements of the current administration and strengthen the unity of the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
AbdulRazaq described the APC chieftain as “young, pro-people, astute, and broad-minded,” adding that Seriki has built enormous goodwill across Kwara State through years of political mobilisation and investments in the people.
“I have no doubt about his capacity and that his choice is appropriate for the people of our state at this time,” the governor stated.
The endorsement comes ahead of the APC gubernatorial primaries scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026. AbdulRazaq, however, clarified that his endorsement does not stop other aspirants from participating in the primary election.
According to him, all aspirants remain qualified and respected members of the party, but party leaders and members should rally behind Seriki in the interest of cohesion, unity, and the continued success of the APC in the state.
“The choice of Amb. Yahaya Seriki is neither a disapproval of any of our eminently qualified aspirants nor a whimsical attempt to delegitimise the noble aspirations of our people,” he said.
He noted that the contest involves about 16 aspirants seeking the party’s ticket, stressing that only one candidate can emerge at the end of the process.
The governor also praised the maturity, discipline, and statesmanship displayed by the governorship aspirants throughout the consultation process, commending their commitment to building on the achievements of his administration over the last seven years.
Political observers believe the endorsement may significantly shape the outcome of the APC primaries, given AbdulRazaq’s influence within the party structure in Kwara State.
