A Lieutenant Colonel and six soldiers met their demise in an ambush along the Biu-Buni Yadi road in Borno State. This incident occurred just a week after military personnel were laid to rest following their murder during a peace mission in Delta State.
The ambush, orchestrated by Boko Haram insurgents, took place near Kamuya, a village close to Buratai, the former Chief of Army Staff’s hometown. According to a security source, the soldiers were en route to Damaturu in Yobe State to purchase fuel when they encountered the attack.
Expressing sorrow over the loss, the source stated, “It’s very sad; they were soldiers of 135 Special Force BN FOB in Buratai. They were ambushed on their way to Damaturu, Yobe state, to buy fuel.”
The casualties included an officer, a driver, a gunner, and four other escorts, with the wounded currently receiving treatment in a hospital.
A local eyewitness who narrowly escaped the gunfire shared, “I can’t describe the kind of gun battle that ensued, the insurgents who were in large number overwhelmed the soldiers. It’s by God’s grace that I survived.”
This tragic incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in combating insurgency in the region.
