Former Senate President and Waziri of Ilorin, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, has reassured members and supporters of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that there is no cause for alarm following recent high-profile defections from the Delta State chapter of the party.
In a statement released today, Saraki addressed concerns raised by party members and political observers in the wake of the defection of key leaders, including the state’s governor and former running mate to the PDP’s presidential candidate. The development had stirred reactions across the political landscape, prompting Saraki to offer clarity and direction.
“My view is that those who want to leave the PDP should leave now and let the rest of us who want to stay concentrate on rebuilding the party,” Saraki said, emphasizing the need for loyalty and focus in repositioning the party as a viable opposition.
He warned against the danger of a one-party state, arguing that the absence of a strong opposition threatens Nigeria’s democratic structure, especially in a country as diverse as Nigeria. “To sustain democracy, there must be viable choices for people and a vibrant opposition to keep hope alive and hold the government accountable,” he said.
While acknowledging the disappointment among party members, Saraki called on them not to be discouraged. He insisted that the PDP is undergoing a rebirth, noting that it is better for the party to have fewer, more committed members than to harbor individuals with divided loyalties.
“This development has vindicated the stance of people like me who have chosen to observe in silence,” he remarked. “Now, it is clearer who truly stands with the PDP.”
He also described the defection of a former vice-presidential candidate to the ruling party as “shocking and unprecedented,” calling it a reflection of the collapse of political values and leadership ethics in the country.
Looking ahead, Saraki expressed confidence in the PDP’s ability to bounce back before the next general elections. “We still have about two years. That is a long time in politics. Nothing stops us from gaining ground or attracting new governors from other parties,” he stated.
He urged party members, especially the youth and women, to seize the moment to mobilize and contribute to the rebuilding mission. Saraki further assured that the PDP leadership would soon convene to strategize and respond effectively to the recent developments.
“There is no cause for alarm. Let us stay focused, hopeful, and determined. The future is still bright for the PDP,” he concluded.
