The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared a resolute stance against what it terms as “mega thieves” and cyber criminals, promising no respite in its ongoing battle against corruption. This stern resolve comes amidst recent arrests of former governors, highlighting the agency’s commitment to tackling corruption at all levels.
Chairman of the EFCC, Ola Olukoyede, emphasized this determination during an anti-corruption concert in Abuja aimed at raising public awareness and engagement in combating internet crimes. Addressing concerns about the agency’s focus solely on cybercrime, Olukoyede stated unequivocally, “We will not spare anyone. We will not spare the mega thieves.”
Olukoyede clarified that while internet fraud is a significant concern, the EFCC’s mandate extends to all forms of economic and financial crimes. He warned against the allure of quick gains through illicit activities, emphasizing the grave consequences, including career limitations and societal stigma, associated with conviction for such offenses.
Under Olukoyede’s leadership, the EFCC is strategically planning a Cyber Crime Research Centre within the New Academy of the EFCC, aimed at engaging youths in comprehensive research on cybercrime while channeling their energies towards constructive endeavors. He urged youths to embrace diligence and ethical conduct, emphasizing the dignity in hard work.
Support for the EFCC’s anti-corruption crusade echoed from Minister of State for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, who called on Nigerian youths to join hands in combating economic crimes and safeguarding the nation’s future. Olawande emphasized the collective responsibility in fighting corruption, rallying young Nigerians to demonstrate their determination in rewriting Nigeria’s narrative on the global stage.
