The Senate, led by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has suspended Senator Abdul Ningi over allegations of N3.7 trillion in budget padding in the 2024 budget. The suspension, which came after a heated session in the red chamber, will last for three months.
Senator Ningi, representing Bauchi Central Senatorial District, faced the motion for suspension from fellow lawmaker Jimoh Ibrahim, a member of the Appropriation Committee. Ibrahim cited accusations of criminal misinformation and breach of peace within the National Assembly and beyond.
However, the motion faced amendments proposed by Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River South Senatorial District. Ekpenyong advocated for a reduction in the suspension period, leading to the final decision of a three-month suspension for Senator Ningi.
“This suspension sends a clear message that the Senate is committed to upholding integrity and accountability in budgetary processes,” remarked Senate President Godswill Akpabio following the session.
