Governor Alex Otti of Abia announced during a monthly media gathering in Umuahia that the state government has successfully settled all outstanding pension arrears for around 12,500 retirees. This move comes as part of a commitment to prioritize the welfare of pensioners and enhance healthcare services across the state.
Governor Otti emphasized, “We have paid all the pensions and arrears of about 12,500 retirees, amounting to over N9 billion out of a N10 billion allocation for this purpose.” He reiterated his administration’s dedication to ensuring that pensioners receive their full entitlements promptly, setting a deadline of the 28th of every month for disbursements.
Reflecting on challenges faced earlier, Governor Otti stated, “Upon assuming office in 2023, we promised to clear all pension arrears by the year’s end. Despite hurdles such as a rigorous verification exercise, we have now fulfilled that commitment.” He pledged to prevent future backlogs of pensions and arrears, guaranteeing 100% payment going forward.
In addition to addressing pension concerns, the governor outlined plans to bolster healthcare services. Collaborating with a medical group, over 80 doctors will offer free medical care, including surgeries, within the state. This initiative aims to enhance access to quality healthcare, especially for residents outside the capital.
Governor Otti urged citizens to seize the opportunity for free medical check-ups and treatments, highlighting the government’s logistical support for participants. Furthermore, he reiterated ongoing efforts to upgrade the state’s 948 primary health care centers.
During the session, Governor Otti also discussed various developmental initiatives in response to questions from journalists, underlining his administration’s commitment to overall progress and well-being in Abia.e
