The newly signed law, named the “Abia State Governors and Deputy Governors Pensions (Repeal) Law, 2024,” marks a significant shift in governmental policy.

Governor Otti emphasized the importance of prioritizing public interests over personal gains, stating, “Government was not about self-interest, which he said destroys government.” He further explained, “Even before this new law came into place, a lot of people who have followed our views in the national discuss understand that we were not going to continue the practice of paying pensions and allowances to this set of former government officials.”

The Executive Bill supporting this move was swiftly passed by the Assembly on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, highlighting widespread support for this progressive initiative. This decision reflects a broader trend towards accountability and transparency in governance, resonating with citizens who demand responsible stewardship of public resources.
