President Bola Tinubu has called upon members of the House of Representatives and Senate to exercise restraint in summoning heads of ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) before parliamentary committees, emphasizing the importance of maintaining operational continuity and efficient service delivery to citizens.
During the breaking of Ramadan fast in Abuja on Wednesday, President Tinubu, alongside Speaker Tajudeen Abbas and House leadership, underscored the significance of oversight in ensuring transparency and accountability in governance. However, he cautioned against excessive summoning of officials, which can disrupt operations and impede service delivery.
President Tinubu urged lawmakers to exercise discretion in their oversight functions, stating, “I have been watching various committees summoning ministers and heads of agencies. I have complained to the Speaker to let the poor breathe. Let these people do the job.”
Acknowledging the lawmakers’ influence and oversight responsibilities, he stressed the need to consider the primary duties of each agency and the responsibilities of key officials like the Governor of the Central Bank and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Finance Minister.
“If they are distracted or disturbed, maybe we will shift parliamentary sitting all through the night. We must find a way to accommodate one another,” President Tinubu added.
Additionally, President Tinubu announced that the nation would honor the 17 military personnel tragically killed in Delta State last Thursday, emphasizing the solemn respect for their sacrifice.
