The Canary Icon of the Quarter: Hon. Adedapo Lam-Adesina

0

Hon. Adedapo Lam-Adesina, popularly called Dapo Lam or Omo Oloore, was born on 25th October, 1978 into the family of Late Alhaji Lam and Alhaja Sarat Adesina in Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria.

He is a young Nigerian who strongly believes in the enthronement of a classless and socially equal society in Nigeria. This belief is the basis by which he lives his life.

He attended the reputable Government College, Ibadan (GCI), and went on to study Electrical and Electronics Engineering at The Polytechnic, Ibadan (Eruwa campus). He was later admitted to the University of Ibadan where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree (B.Sc) in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering.

His political career started in 1998, during the successful transition from Military to Civilian rule. He started out as the Pioneer Secretary for the Youth wing of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Ibarapa East Local Government, and his dedication and commitment to his work and the people made him the President of the Youth wing about a year after.

During his days in the University of Ibadan, he was President, Students Liberation Forum (SLF), Chairman Finance Committee of the AEE Students Society, and a Member of the Industrial Training Coordinating Centre Student Committee of the prestigious University.

His desire to embrace responsibilities was further displayed when (in 2005) He broke the jinx of students’ indifference to voting and elections on campus. Students trooped out en masse to vote for him during the AEE Students Society election in what was considered the election with the most impressive turnout. He did not disappoint the students throughout his tenure, and several years after graduation, his achievements are still very visible on that campus.

In 2007, after the completion of his compulsory NYSC program in Enugu, he advanced his career in two distinctively different industries; Oil and Gas, and Agriculture, and he performed excellently in both industries due to his brilliance and the ability to multitask. He was a partner in Skipet Oil Limited, a firm that supplies diesel to end users and was there until when he took up the responsibilities of a public servant.

He is the Co-Founder and President of Future Initiative based in Nigeria, a platform that gives the Nigerian youth the opportunity to seek for a better deal for the upcoming generation. He is also a Patron for the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC RS 11:32), and an advisory board member of Youth Advocators Network.

Adedapo Lam-Adesina is passionate about empowering the less privileged and derelicts, and seeing them become all that they can be.

In December 2008, he took Santa Claus (Father Christmas) to the motherless babies’ homes and to the rural areas in Ibadan, and held a party in their honour. This he did to boost the confidence of the less privileged, and to reassure them of their unquestionable importance. In the last 16 years, he has celebrated his birthday with the motherless babies at the Ibadan Home for the Motherless, Yemetu in Ibadan, Oyo State.

In 2011, he lost in his bid to be elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN). He was thereafter appointed Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, a position he held and performed exceptionally well before being redeployed to the Ministry of Industry, Applied Science and Technology in November, 2013.

As Commissioner for Youth and Sports, he started a total re-orientation of young people in Oyo State, with special attention to youth development and empowerment. He re-engineered recreation and sports development as he facilitated the improvement of sports infrastructural facilities. Worthy of note is that he increased the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) of Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC: Oluyole Warriors) by a very high percentage within two (2) years, he also completed the permanent site of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Iseyin, the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State.

During his tenure as Commissioner, the best set of NYSC members who were considered to have served meritoriously were given automatic employment by the State government as motivation for hardwork, selfless service and diligence. Dapo Lam also completed the then abandoned Lekan Salami stadium with laid artificial turf, refurbished plastic seats, athletic track, and indoor sports hall. He went further to secure corporate sponsorship for the State’s football club; 3SC.

Also as Commissioner, he organized two editions of Job and Entrepreneurship Skills Acquisition Fair where about a thousand young and unemployed Nigerians were trained in eight (8) vocational skills, they were also equipped with professional materials and start-up capital after completion of their training. Over 400 graduates were also gainfully employed by blue-chip companies that participated at the job fair.

Adedapo Lam-Adesina was adjudged one of the best Commissioners in Oyo State between 2011 and 2015.

As a transparent and open public servant, Dapo Lam, after his resignation as Commissioner in November 2014, publicly declared his assets for necessary documentation with the Code of Conduct Bureau.

In 2015, he was elected as a member of the  House of Representatives by the good people of Ibadan South-East/North-East Federal Constituency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress(APC); the opposition party that won the Presidency. This had never happened in the history of Nigeria.

His mission at the ‘Green Chamber’ is contained in his “New Era” blueprint with eight (8) cardinal points; Support Scheme for widows and the aged, Employment opportunities and empowerment for the youth, Infrastructural facilities development for public schools, Interest-free loans for traders, Sports development, Regular consultation cum interaction with constituents, and adequate representation and support for all developmental bills at the National Assembly.

More assuring, he started pursuing and implementing his electoral promises with expected zeal and exceptional determination immediately after been sworn in . It is on record that he is the first elected Federal legislator in Oyo State to hold an accountability town hall meeting during the 4th republic.

He was a member of the House committee on Healthcare services, Agricultural production, Niger Delta Affairs, Sports, Labour and Productivity, Poverty Allievation, and Special duties during the 8th Assembly.

He was also a member of the House of Representatives Adhoc Committees on:

  1. Manbilla Power Plant Investigation
