Ortom inaugurates state varsity governing board

Governor Samuel Ortom today inaugurated the 7th Governing Council of the Benue State University, BSU, Makurdi with a charge on them to reposition the institution to enable it attain greater heights.

The Governor while performing the ceremony at the New Banquet Hall of the Benue Peoples House Makurdi, also charged the Chairman and Members of the Council to ensure that the university produces graduates who would be self-employed.

He stated that BSU, with students population of 25,000, is truly a great centre of learning in the country, stressing that even the worst critics of his administration acknowledge the passion he has for the development of the ivory tower and other state-owned tertiary institutions.

Governor Ortom noted that the Benue State University comes first among universities in the country in terms of payment of Earned and Academic Allowances which underscores his administration’s commitment to the welfare of staff.

The Governor also noted that with the desired attention and renewed efforts by his administration, the medical school of the institution now graduates high quality medical doctors, pointing out that the Schools of Nursing and Midwifery had been renovated and fully integrated with the College of Health Sciences of BSU.

According to him, new staff have been hired by the Benue State University to make its faculties strong and improve the quality of learning, saying he had also directed that senior professors who had retired but were still active be employed on contract basis to improve research, teaching and supervision.

Governor Ortom acknowledged his administration’s determination to ensure a stronger educational foundation for the Benue child through massive renovation and repositioning of basic and secondary education across the state.

Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Professor Zackarys Gundu, while thanking the Governor for finding them worthy to serve in that capacity, pledged to reposition the institution to produce graduates who would stand out in parts of the world.
