Nigeria is gearing up to enhance its air force capabilities with the acquisition of 24 fighter jets from Leonardo, an Italian aerospace company. The announcement came from Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Air Force, who revealed that the jets would be delivered in four batches, each comprising six aircraft.
“The first six M-346 fighter aircraft are expected to arrive in Nigeria before the end of the year,” stated the Air Force.
This decision follows a recent meeting between Claudio Sabatino, Vice President of Leonardo, and Nigeria’s air force chief in Abuja. Leonardo has committed to providing maintenance support for a minimum of 25 years, ensuring the longevity and operational readiness of the new fleet.
Nigeria’s move to acquire these fighter jets is part of a broader strategy to strengthen its ability to combat insurgency, particularly in regions like the northeast, where groups like Boko Haram and the Islamic State affiliate are active. Additionally, the country faces challenges with widespread kidnapping and banditry, making bolstering its air force a strategic priority.
By investing in advanced aircraft and long-term maintenance support, Nigeria aims to enhance its defense capabilities and secure its airspace against various security threats.
