Jela’s Development Initiative, a non-governmental organization (NGO), recently conducted a training program for approximately thirty teachers across various schools in Kwara State’s sixteen Local Government Areas. The training focused on mental health awareness and advocacy to improve curriculum delivery effectiveness.

The NGO’s programme officer, Rita Akhabue, emphasized the significance of teachers’ mental well-being in driving quality education. Akhabue stated, “The mental health of teachers is key to delivering quality curriculum, benefiting students in the long run.” The training, centered on discussions about mental health’s critical role in service delivery, addresses the current lack of awareness among educators. This gap underscores the necessity for awareness campaigns to equip teachers adequately for effective curriculum delivery.

Participants expressed appreciation for the training’s timeliness and anticipated positive impacts on their teaching efficacy. Notably, the organizers highlighted the need for a shift in societal attitudes toward mental health advocacy, criticizing the insufficient government attention to this pressing issue.

As the training’s ripple effects spread, there’s a growing call for increased mental health awareness and advocacy, especially within educational settings. The NGO and its partners remain committed to fostering attitudinal changes and urging greater government involvement to ensure holistic support for mental health initiatives.
