Striving to transform the agricultural sector in Oyo State, Gov. Seyi Makinde has inaugurated the mechanisation of cassava production and processing project at Fashola, near Oyo, partnering with the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) to modernize farming practices.
Gov. Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, through his representative, the commissioner for agriculture and rural development, Olasunkanmi Olaleye, praised the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) for their collaboration in implementing the cassava mechanisation project, emphasizing its significance in advancing agricultural practices in the region.
“This project signifies a crucial step towards modernizing our agriculture sector,” remarked Gov. Makinde. “By leveraging mechanised techniques, we aim to enhance efficiency, increase yields, and empower our farmers in the competitive market.”
The project introduces innovative cassava processing machinery, generating high-quality cassava flour for human consumption and coarser flour for animal feed, thereby adding value to the entire crop without peeling.
“The potential of cassava in Nigeria is immense, yet hindered by challenges in production, post-harvest management, and processing,” noted Dr. Canisius Kanangire, Executive Director of AATF. “Mechanisation offers a transformative solution to bridge these gaps, reduce losses, and create economic opportunities.”
Participants including representatives from the Nigeria Root Crops Research Institute (NRCRI), Nigeria Stored Products Research Institute (NSPRI), and agricultural stakeholders emphasized the project’s potential to improve farmers’ income, reduce wastage, and stimulate rural economies.
“The future of cassava farming lies in embracing modern techniques,” urged Gov. Makinde. “Let’s unite to propel Oyo State towards agricultural excellence.”
The project’s launch signals a pivotal moment in Oyo State’s agricultural evolution, promising economic growth, sustainability, and prosperity for farmers and processors alike.
