Kwara First Lady Calls For End to Prevalence of Drug Abuse

The First Lady of Kwara State and Founder, Ajike peoples Support center Her Excellency Dr Mrs Olufolake Abdulrazaq has reiterated her commitment towards the eradication of drug abuse in our communities.

The first lady stated this during a zoom conference held in commemoration of the 2020 International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, she decried the rate at which youths and young adults engage themselves in experimenting with these destructive drugs.

Dr Abdulrazaq at the summit observed that the abuse of drugs aborts lofty dreams and as such called for mental health counseling for abusers, she added that a total of 138 abusers has been counselled and reconnected with their families.

Speaking further the kwara State first lady noted that from the last quarter of 2019 to the first quarter of this year, no fewer than 8,895 persons has been sensitized by the Kwara State Drug Control committee on the dangers inherent in drug abuse and sale of illicit drugs.

She however enjoin youths to embrace grassroots sports, focus more on education and be conscious of their mental health.

Dr Abdulrazaq at the conference spoke about the effect of Drug use on Gender based Violence and informed that all First ladies had come together to fight the increasing rape and gender based violence witnessed in the country which includes drug use and its effect on gender based violence.

The First Lady also invited the Commissioner for Health, Comissioner for Social Development and the Chairperson of the Kwara State Drug Eradication Committee to join the Zoom meeting where the Commissioner for Health Dr Raji Razaq made remarks on the state Governments drive to eradicate the disease, highlighting the provision of rehabilitation centres and other government initiatives.

The First Lady’s presentation was well received by attendees at the event by the commendations received after the question and answer session.
