The Lagos State Government has reiterated its commitment to the safety and health of workers in the State as it joins the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work 2020, themed: “Stop the Pandemic, Safety And Health Can Save Lives”.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director-General, Safety Commission, Mr. Lanre Mojola, the Day is an annual event celebrated globally on 28th April by the International Labour Organisation (ILO), to create awareness on accident prevention and reduction of work-related illnesses and injury at workplaces.
He declared that various institutions and governments are currently faced with the challenges of combating the Coronavirus pandemic ravaging the globe, as such, there is a need for the continuous campaign on prevention and safety in workplaces.
In his words, “Occupational health and safety is a global phenomenon which cannot be ignored or compromised, it is also worrisome that COVID-19 pandemic has posed threats to public health and a rise in fatalities, which has led to global economic and social lockdown”.
He averred that the Y2020 World Safety and Health at Work is focused on the need to embracing safe practices in all workplaces and developing means of practical action for the protection of workers and their mental health as well as effective implementation of sound occupational safety and health management systems in combating illnesses.
“The Day also focuses on preventing injuries and fatalities at workplaces; promoting standards and code of ethics during and post-pandemic period; strategic recovery, future preparedness and integrating measures into Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) and management systems and policies at the National, State and enterprise levels”, he added.
While calling on all workers to continue to support the government efforts to curb the spread of the Coronavirus pandemic in the State, Majola maintained that the present administration is determined to do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety and health of its workforce.
