The Minister for Youth Development, Olawande Emmanuel Ayodele, has clarified his comments on the proposed reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) uniform, stressing that no decision has been made on replacing the current attire.

The clarification follows media reports that emerged after the minister’s appearance on Channels Television on Thursday, where he discussed ongoing reforms within the NYSC.

In a statement, Ayodele explained that his reference to Adire and Ankara fabrics during the interview was merely to highlight some of the proposals being considered during stakeholder consultations and not an announcement of an approved replacement for the existing uniform.

“For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I mentioned Adire during the discussion. I also mentioned Ankara. My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations,” the minister said.

He emphasized that government is currently evaluating various options based on key considerations, including professional appearance, national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the promotion of national pride.

According to him, no final decision has been reached on either the fabric or the design of a new NYSC uniform.

The minister added that, like every other component of the ongoing NYSC reforms, any eventual decision would be the outcome of extensive stakeholder engagement and guided by what best serves the interests of the Scheme and the country.

Ayodele urged Nigerians not to allow debates over the proposed uniform to overshadow the broader objectives of the reform agenda, which he described as crucial to repositioning the NYSC for greater national impact.

He said the reforms are aimed at improving the employability of corps members, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and ensuring a smoother transition from education to productive careers.

“While conversations around the uniform are understandable, they should not overshadow the far-reaching reforms aimed at empowering millions of Nigerian youths and positioning the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development,” he stated.

The minister also appreciated the public’s constructive feedback, assuring Nigerians that every proposal under consideration would be carefully evaluated in the best interest of the nation.

The Federal Government has been consulting stakeholders as part of efforts to reform the NYSC and align the scheme with current socio-economic realities while enhancing its relevance to national development.
