President Bola Tinubu Inaugurates Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament

Inaugurating the Sixth Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament, President Bola Tinubu, Chair of ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, emphasized the crucial need for strong and direct representation to combat divisive forces and foster unity in West Africa.

Speaking in Abuja, President Tinubu highlighted the urgency of regional solidarity in fortifying the bloc against disintegration threats. “We stand united against such forces and are committed to ensuring that our unity remains unshaken,” he stated, stressing the importance of reinforcing decision-making legitimacy within ECOWAS.

President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS objectives and the role of the Parliament in achieving regional peace and prosperity. He endorsed proposals for enhanced powers and direct universal suffrage for ECOWAS Parliament members, aligning with democratic principles and the ECOWAS Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.

Expressing Nigeria’s support as the host country, President Tinubu encouraged the Parliament to address regional concerns and work towards peace and advancement, assuring ongoing Nigerian support for ECOWAS missions.

Chief Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President, emphasized Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS Parliament’s goals and progress toward a unified ECOWAS institution complex in Abuja.
