Suspected bandits launched a devastating assault on Madaka community in Niger State, claiming the lives of 21 individuals, including the village head, in a tragic bandit attack that shook the region. The incident, which occurred around 3 pm on Thursday, unfolded amidst the bustling activity of the community market, resulting in chaos and a grim tally of casualties.

Eyewitnesses described a scene of terror as armed assailants descended upon the village, unleashing merciless gunfire that indiscriminately snuffed out lives and reduced the vibrant market to ash. Approximately 50 residences, along with several commercial establishments, and numerous vehicles and motorcycles, were engulfed in flames, leaving behind a trail of destruction.

Alhaji Isah Bawale, a respected district head, confirmed the harrowing events in a somber telephone interview from Minna, the state capital. He lamented the lack of adequate security presence in Madaka since a previous assault years ago, which had claimed the life of a former district head.

Efforts to get clarification and assurance from the Niger State Command of Police, through the Public Relations Officer SP Wasiu Abiodun, were met with promises of verification and a follow-up. However, no response had been received at the time of this report.

The Niger State Government has yet to comment on the incident, raising concerns about the measures in place to safeguard vulnerable communities like Madaka against such brazen acts of violence. The tragedy underscores the urgent need for enhanced security measures and swift action to protect communities from bandit violence.
